Classes at Barnardo's Children's Centre in Winton and
Westbourne
Baby Sensory classes are now being run in the Barnardo's
Children's Centres in Bournemouth. These classes
are already proving extremely popular and advanced
booking is essential. The Baby
Sensory classes allow parents and babies to experience a
wide range of activities including fibre optic light
shows, bubbles, textures, musical instruments, puppet
shows, baby signing and much more.
We are currently running
limited-place, 6 week Baby Sensory courses. As the
places are subsidised by the Children’s Centre’s and are
being offered as part of a wider family support service,
there is a criteria for being allocated a place.
Priority will be given to:
Families who live with
local area to the Children’s Centre and where their
Health Visitor, Midwife, G.P. or other relevant
practitioners have identified the programme as being of
benefit for them.
We realise that Baby
Sensory is very popular and it’s unlikely we will be
able to meet the local demand. We therefore suggest
contacting Nim Dutt
(07771 825159 or 01202 755630 e-mail:
bournemouthwest@babysensory.co.uk) who runs classes
locally.

Vicki Axford:
CACHE Diploma
BA (Hons)
Family Support Worker
I have worked
with children and families for over 6 years in a variety
of childcare settings. Before working for Barnardos I
studied at the University of Chichester where in 2007, I
gained a BA (Hons) Childhood Studies: Early Years. My
course at University predominantly focused on
psychological, sociological, historical, cultural
viewpoints of childhood which has given me a wealth of
knowledge and experience in childcare settings. Prior to
going to University I completed a Diploma in Childcare
and Education in 2003. Both of these courses along with
my experience have provided me with a broad perspective
of working with young children from birth to eight years
old, and their families.

BTEC National Diploma
BEd (Hons)
Family Support Worker
Hi! My name is
Stef. I have a BTEC National Diploma in Early Years
Childcare which I studied at Bournemouth College. I then
continued my education by studying a BEd Honours degree
in Education and Early Childhood Studies at Roehampton
University in London. By completing my studies this has
allowed me to gain an in-depth theoretical knowledge by
completing many modules; some of these included
children’s development, play, imagination and creativity
and learning about the elements and history of
children’s education. Before and during my studies I
have worked in various settings allowing me to gain
further practical experience in working with children
between 0-5 years.

Family Support Worker
I’ve worked
with young children and their families for nearly 25
years in many different settings. Over the last 10 years
I’ve had the opportunity to broaden my experience in the
area of disability and family support in both a local
authority ‘Family Centre’ and at a school for children
with learning disabilities. I moved from London in 2005
and started working for Barnardo’s as an Early Years
Support Worker, supporting families who have young
disabled children in Bournemouth, Poole and East Dorset.
I also now work as a family support worker within the
Children’s Centre.

BA (Hons) Ed
PGCE Primary
Children’s Centre Team Leader
Since 1999, I
have gained a great deal of experience of working
directly with children aged 0-16 years in play,
education and child care settings. Whilst studying for
my Degree in Education Studies at Bath Spa University, I
worked part time for 3 years as a Play scheme supervisor
in order to bring together my knowledge of child
development with practical experience. Once I completed
my degree I then went on to train as a Primary School
Teacher and returned to University to gain a Post
Graduate Certificate in Education with Qualified Teacher
Status. I then chose to use this qualification to begin
my professional career in community education and took
up a post as Children’s Rights and Participation Worker
with Barnardo’s in Wiltshire. I worked in this role for
3 years running groups to help children and parents to
use creative arts and games to express their feelings
and communicate better as a family. This allowed me to
gain a wealth of experience in working with children and
families facing difficulties such as: low self esteem,
anger management, poor social skills, child behaviour
and domestic violence. I have now been working for
Barnardo’s in Bournemouth as the Children’s Centre Team
Leader for a year and have played a major part in the
development and set up of our new Children’s Centres.
