Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator
Lin's Professional Experience
Lin's professional career with children and babies began
as a paediatric nurse in a large hospital setting. Part
of her role involved supporting the parents of
critically ill babies and looking after children with
special needs. Later, as the parent of four small
children, she learned sign language, and then went on to
work with babies with sensory impairments and children
with low self-esteem or emotional and behavioural
problems in a variety of settings. Intrigued by the
ingenious sensorial teaching methods and observations of
Dr. Maria Montessori, Lin decided to research childhood
development by studying for a Diploma in Childcare and
Education at St. Nicholas College, London.
In
1986, in conjunction with Social Services, Lin set up
the first Early Years holiday scheme for
under-privileged children in Wiltshire and then went on
to establish Woodford Nursery School. The provision of
high quality care and education for children aged 2 to 5
years achieved an excellent Ofsted report in 1997.
During this period, ‘Stagecoach: The First Educational
Course for the Under-fives’ was published to enable
parents and children to interact in the learning process
at home.
After achieving a PGCE, Lin went on to teach and assess
NVQ and BTEC Childcare and Education courses in the
post-16 sector. As part of continued professional
practice, and to help raise the quality of care and
education for all learners, she achieved a Doctorate of
Philosophy at the University of Southampton.
In
2002, Lin established the musical adventure play
concept, ‘Wake Up!’ Her primary aim was to encourage
toddlers and children to become more active through
practical activity. An interesting phenomenon was that
babies were spellbound by what was happening around them
and were able to join in with many of the activities
from an early age. As a result, Lin founded ‘Baby
Sensory’ in 2003.
"It’s hard to put into words how wonderful it felt to
see the babies responding to the activities with such
delight and intensity. Parents who had experienced these
rewards felt more in tune with their babies and were
more willing to approach new and different ways of
stimulating them. For me, the best part has been sharing
the incredible gift of learning with the baby and the
parent!"
Lin
currently teaches and assesses childcare and education
courses in child care settings while continuing
research. She is also a guest speaker at conferences and
training events throughout the UK and a regular feature
writer on baby learning and development in the Early
Years Educator (EYE) magazine.
